March 30 th, 2009, 10:05AM ( Moscow time) – the first aircraft of United, one of the largest US airlines, landed at Domodedovo airport. Upon touchdown the aircraft was saluted by an unforgettable water bridge. The pilots waved the Russian and American flags, symbolizing the start of a new international partnership between Domodedovo airport and United Airlines.
The official opening ceremony took place in the International Sector of Domodedovo. The first passengers and guests of the event were met by an authentic American jazz-band. Representatives of the top-management team of the airport and airline Mr. Michael Witaker, Senior Vice President , International and Regulatory Affairs, Mr. Sergey Rudakov, Domodedovo Airport Complex Director participated in the event. The Ambassador of the US in the Russian Federation Mr. John Beyrle and representative of the Federal Aviation Administration of the US in the Russian Federation Ms. Olga Varfolomeeva were among the honorable guests of the ceremony.
Passengers of the first flight were also involved in the large scale celebration: they were presented souvenirs from United Airlines and Domodedovo, greeted by the symbol of America - Abraham Lincoln himself at the registration desks, where they were invited to a reception.
Commenting on the start of the new direct service, Ambassador Beyrle said: “This new capital to capital service is a great boost to meeting the travel needs of visitors to and from the United States to Russia. United’s new route further enhances the travel options for travelers in the U.S. and within Russia.”
Sergey Rudakov said: “We are delighted to welcome United to this airport and I know that the dedication of the United team in Moscow will ensure that customers will have an all round excellent experience at the airport and in the air. United’s presence at Domodedovo complements our Star Alliance carrier base here and provides more travel options for customers in Russia.”
Michael Whitaker added: “This day is very important to our customers and employees, and would not have been possible without the support of our staff in Moscow, Domodedovo Airport and the team at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Our direct service to Moscow, connecting two of the world most important capitals, further strengthens our global network.”
After the official ceremony the top management of the airport and airline conducted a press briefing where they shared plans on the development and strengthening of the Domodedovo-United partnership with media representatives.
